I hate that I dont feel safe in my own country. I hate that I cant jog outdoors while listening to music cause im scared Im not aware of the surroundings. I hate having to carry a pepper spray in my bag at all times. I hate having to search for a parking spot that is nearest to the escalator ( Shut up Syafiq, Im not lazy. ITS A LOT SAFER CAUSE I DONT HAVE TO WALK THE WHOLE CAR PARK OKAY.)
At first I thought the main focus of kidnappers & thieves are ladies but when I a colleague of mine got kidnapped a month ago, I realize these buggers would do anything for money. Which is why I feel the need to remind everyone including myself of the precautions we have to take to avoid unwanted incidents.
1) ALWAYS be alert.
Dont text, bbm or tweet while you're walking to/out of the car. While doing so, you're not aware of what's going on around you. I know sometimes when you see the red light blinking on your blackberry, you instantly have the urge to see the notification but at least wait till you are out of the carpark to do so.
2) Try not to walk alone.
Even if the compound is lighted up, try not to walk alone. Ask someone to accompany you to the car. Ask the security guard , if you have to.
3) Be prepared
I cannot stand people who only search for their parking ticket/ car keys when they're infront of the autopay/cars. I mean, by the time you're digging your bag , the kidnappers would have ample time to attack. Take out your keys, parking ticket and small change before you reach the basement. At least you spend minimal time at the area and at least you dont annoy impatient people like me when you're infront of the autopay machine.
4) Be proactive
Buruk sangka orang, alwayyssss. I know this is bad for me to say but its for your safety. When you see a suspicious person lurking around you, tell it to someone or change directions. DO SOMETHING.
Sephora supplied each one of us a set of pepper spray and alarm. At least i feel a tad bit safe when I walk alone.
